Maximilien Vox worked as artistic director at publisher Grasset, and also attached his name to publisher Denoël. He also published a series of little books for the Union bibliophile de France. The first three volumes appeared in 1944, the seventeen others in 1945. They were divided into two series of ten, printed in an edition of 1000 copies by two printers: Daniel-Luxe in Lille and Theillet in Sannois.

For the texts, Vox drew from the ancient classics (Lucianus, Paulus Silentiarius) and on the French classics, mainly of the nineteenth century (Rivarol, Balzac, Prosper Mérimée, Stendhal, Dumas). Foreign literature, such as a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, was only included because of its translator: Charles Baudelaire.

Vox was a multi-talented artist, draughtsman, typographer, and journalist, who founded not only series of books, but also newspapers, and whose reputation amongst French typographers remained so extraordinary that the Lycée du livre & des arts graphiques decided to name its academy after him in 1985: Maximilien Vox. He designed a teaching method for the identification of type faces that remains the only one to be recognised by the Association typographique internationale: the classification Vox-AtypI.
