Album amicorum of Hans Heinrich Oberhaupt
f. 117v-118r: Georg von Wangenheim, Paris, 12 June 1630
The album of Hans Heinrich Oberhaupt von Schwarzenfels shows that he stayed in Paris in 1630. From there he travelled via the Southern and Northern Netherlands back to his home town of Sondershausen. His visit to Paris was probably cultural in nature. A few sketches of fortifications betray a military interest.
In Paris, Oberhaupt had six gouaches painted on parchment added to his album, including a view of the Île de la Cité with the Pont Neuf and an image of a wing of the Louvre. The most lively picture is that of the Place des Vosges (then still Place Royale) where a not exactly gentle duel takes place in the presence of great public interest. The coat of arms at the top is that of Georg von Wangenheim, who placed his contribution on the adjacent page. For Von Schwarzenfels, the pictures were memories of his journey through France and the Netherlands.
