Album amicorum of Lambert van Twenhuysen
p. 121: N.N., [Duitsland, ca. 1612]
The album of the Amsterdam shipowner and merchant Lambert van Twenhuysen takes us to Nuremberg and Venice, among other places. Twenhuysen probably had a series of beautiful gouaches and drawings added to his album in Germany. Some of them have a somewhat heavy, rustic style, but are very attractive because of their colorfulness and detailing. The image of a student in his study is a good example of this.
Here, serious studying is taking place and the dog waits patiently until the master has time for him again. But of course, it is about what is happening outside. Cupid has fallen asleep and the man with the shovel has conceived the s/nefarious/ plan to steal and bury the love bow. The gist is clear: as long as love sleeps, study flourishes.
