Leonardus Hoeufft (1757-1824) obtained his doctorate in law from Leiden University in 1778. In the album amicorum that he created during his studies, he was rather introverted: only fellow lawyers were given a place. The only exception is the miniaturist Johan Christian Elin, who came from Berlin and settled in Leiden in 1752. As proof of his ability, he painted a miniature portrait. He added a very sublime poem on love: ‘suivre zieljuweelen’, ‘Eed’le zeeden’, ‘chaste friendship’, all equally neat.

It's funny that Elin wrote exactly the same verse in another album about twenty years earlier. He did add a different drawing: a lady trying to ward off the overly enthusiastic advances of a gentleman.
