Album amicorum II of Burchard Grossmann

Inscription by Burchard Grossmann

Grossmann visited the Netherlands three times. In 1629 he was in Leiden and in 1630 in The Hague for a short while, but his most extensive visit was in 1634. From Hamburg he travelled to Amsterdam with a friend, went on to Leiden and The Hague and returned via Den Bosch (where their ship was almost attacked by a group of robbers from Breda).

One of the pearls in his album is the brush drawing he managed to wrest from Rembrandt. Was the money bag waved for it? The life wisdom that the painter placed gives the impression that it was not: ‘A pious mind considers honour to be good’.
